President Ronald J. Daniels and Dr. Juan Arvelo Dr. Arvelo is a physicist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. He is also a faculty member (currently on part-time sabbatical) of the Whiting School of Engineering’s Mechanical Engineering Department at the university. While at APL, Dr. Arvelo joined the Women and Minorities Advisory Committee (WMAC) in 2001 during its formative years. As a member of the committee, he was instrumental in structuring this committee into key subcommittees and heading the communications subcommittee until 2003. He was also a very active part of the Diversity Leadership Council from 2002-2005.
Since 1983, Dr. Arvelo has been an active member of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) and the Acoustical Society of America (ASA). In 2007, Juan became the ASA liaison to the AIP Committee on Under-Represented Minorities. This committee was formed to explore steps that the AIP should take to increase diversity in physics. In an effort to increase diversity in the physics and acoustics communities, he took on the role to introduce acoustics to the annual joint conference of the National Society of Black Physicist and the National Society of Hispanic Physicist. At the 2008 conference, Juan chaired two acoustics technical sessions with invited guests. He was also instrumental in influencing the board’s decision to invite JHU’s Professor Jim West as a plenary speaker. At the 2009 conference Juan led a team of ASA volunteers to increase the number of acoustics-related events. Congratulations Juan on your commitment to diversity and inclusion.
