President Ronald J. Daniels and Ms. Beverly White-Seals Ms. White-Seals is currently a member of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Board of Trustees. She also has been a member of the Howard County General Hospital’s board of trustees since 2001. From 2005 to 2007, she served as the board’s chair.
In the last 10 years, Howard County has seen a rapid growth in its immigrant population. The greatest portion of this new population consists of Latin American, Asia Pacific and African peoples. Ms. White-Seals recognized that access to health care was a critical issue for these new populations and used her position as a board member to elevate their plight. Through her leadership, she challenged the hospital’s management team to reach out to these populations in an effort to remove some of the barriers to health care.
At the beginning of her two-year term in 2005, Beverly began a series of outreach meetings with leaders of the Latino, Korean, Muslim and African communities in Howard County seeking to understand the challenges they faced in securing quality health care. She then met with government leaders and heads of non-profits to explore and understand the resources available within the community that could assist these new residents. The Council informed and advised the hospital’s management regarding the health care needs of this increasingly diverse population. She worked closely with the hospital’s president to ingrain the values of a diverse work environment into the fabric of the organization. As a result of her efforts, this two-year old Council has yielded important strategic initiatives to diversify the organization’s culture, recruitment strategies, pipeline of leadership development and policies and procedures for caring for an increasingly diverse patient population.
She also shared Howard County General’s approaches and lessons learned with the leadership of the Johns Hopkins Health System. Congratulations Beverly White-Seals on your commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. Return to the gallery | | |
