The group has improved the lives of people around the world through the implementation of environmentally and economically sustainable engineering projects. While building water supply systems and designing retaining walls the students, under the leadership of Dr. William Ball (EWB’s faculty advisor), have also built relationships that cross cultural, racial, religious, socio-economic and geographic borders. The students have learned to value cultural differences and recognize similarities and have brought these lessons home, promoting cross-cultural understanding on the Johns Hopkins campus as well.
This past year, the students worked on three projects: a) building irrigation systems to villages in South Africa; b) laying the groundwork for construction of a nursery school in earthquake ravaged village in Ecuador; and c) designing a solar-powered pump system and tank to produce potable water to a village in Guatemala. Student teams spent their summer, winter and spring breaks working at the three project locations. Congratulations Engineers Without Borders, on your commitment to diversity and inclusion!
