President Ronald J. Daniels and Dr. Frederick Brancati

President Ronald J. Daniels and Dr. Frederick Brancati

Dr. Brancati has been a Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine since 1992. According to his students, “Dr. Brancati exemplifies an institutional leader who has changed the landscape of the Johns Hopkins University through recruiting and mentoring under-represented minorities, women and scientists throughout his career.” They also affirm that, Dr. Brancati has encouraged and enabled each of them to pursue new projects which are independent of his research program.

Since coming to Hopkins, Dr. Brancati has mentored 39 individuals in the Schools of Medicine and Public Health. One third of these students have been under-represented minorities, 18% have been graduates of international training programs and 69% have been women. As Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine, Dr. Brancati has orchestrated the recruitment and retention of diverse faculty which includes 13% under-represented minorities and 52% female. Also, the Division of General Internal Medicine is the home of the first African American Distinguished Service Professor (Dr. Neil Powe) and the first female African American Professor of Medicine (Dr. Lisa Cooper).

Dr. Brancati has served in a variety of capacities to promote diversity and inclusion. For the Department of Medicine, he has served on a taskforce to promote diversity in post-doctoral fellowship recruitment and on a committee to investigate ways to improve work-life balance. He has served as a Principal Investigator on 6 NIDDK-funded supplements to support under-represented minority graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty. Congratulations Dr. Brancati for exemplifying the values of diversity and inclusion.
