President Ronald J. Daniels and Mr. C. Michael Armstrong Upon becoming chair of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Board of Trustees in June 2005, Mr. Armstrong began to influence the Hopkins community to increase its efforts to recruit and retain underrepresented minority students and faculty. As a result of his leadership, in 2006 the board added diversity and inclusion to Johns Hopkins Medicine’s mission, vision and value statements. Mr. Armstrong put this concept into practice by creating greater accountability and adding a board member to the Diversity Leadership Council. This effort help to bridge health disparities build cultural competence and foster inclusion to reflect the Hopkins commitment to the community. Mr. Armstrong noticed that the School of Medicine did not offer merit-based scholarships and as a result, Hopkins was losing highly qualified underrepresented minority medical students to peer schools. To remedy this situation, Mr. Armstrong founded the Board of Advisors Scholars program. This program provided financial support for tuition and living expenses to students from diverse backgrounds. Mr. Armstrong and other trustees provided the initial funding for this four year-old program. This month, four Scholars’ students will graduate as a result of the assistance of this program. Congratulations and thank you Mr. Armstrong for your dedication and commitment to diversity and inclusion. Return to the gallery | | |
