2008 Diversity Recognition Award Recipients

Ms. Caroline McEnnis and Mr. Benjamin Tang

Group Award: Ms. Caroline McEnnis and Mr. Benjamin Tang

While pursing their PhDs full-time, Caroline and Ben worked with the National Federation for the Blind in preparing to host 200 blind and low-vision high school students from 40 states for Youth Slam, which was held on the Johns Hopkins University campus from July 31 to August 4, 2007.

Caroline and Ben worked with JHU faculty to ensure that the educational components were as much fun as they were informative for the students. Students participated in specially designed non-visual science and technology experiments and workshops using JHU facilities. They used innovative teaching techniques to enable young blind people to complete science and technology projects. The event focused on mentoring students to pursue further education and careers in the science and technology fields. As a result of their creative approach, students were able to build rockets and collect audible data from weather balloon sensors as well as focus on astronomy, biology, robotics and environmental chemistry. Because of their work, the program was a tremendous success. Caroline and Ben exemplify the true values of diversity and inclusion. Congratulations Caroline and Benjamin.
