2008 Diversity Recognition Award Recipients

Ella Durant

Ms. Ella Durant

As an Ancillary Education Specialist at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Ella Durant ensures that employees understand their role in providing exceptional patient care. She interacts with people at all levels of the organization but is primarily responsible for the education, mentoring, orientation and development of the nursing department’s secretarial, patient care technician and other staff that support the professional nursing staff in the acute care center.

A long-time member and co-chair of the hospital’s Black History Month Committee, Ella ensures that the month long event provides an opportunity to bring everyone together in a global celebration of history, achievement and awareness. In 2007, she was appointed to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Diversity Council Workforce Training and Education Committee. This committee’s focus is to identify specific goals for manager and employee training that will result in culturally competent and inclusive behaviors. She has attended outside seminars to increase her knowledge of inclusive healthcare environments and works as an integral part of her committee and the Council. Ella never hesitates to assist with special projects despite her vigorous schedule. She is an active member of the Service Excellence team, Catch a Shining Star committee and multiple projects that promote staff recognition and support. In 2005, Ella realized that nursing education staff did not receive the recognition they deserved. With her own money and time, she developed criteria for an award, planned and implemented a celebration of nursing which has become a permanent part of the Division’s culture. Ella, Congratulations.
