Dr. Barbara Cook Dr. Cook is President of Johns Hopkins Community Physicians. Last year, Johns Hopkins Community Physicians opened a Hispanic clinic on Wednesday evenings. Many of the clinic’s patients are uninsured or under-insured. Dr. Cook, who is a bilingual family practice physician, not only led the implementation of the clinic but also volunteers her time and medical expertise, Wednesday evenings. Dr. Cook is skilled in translation and is able to recognize and understand the subtle cultural differences which make medical care challenging for this particular group of patients. When patients did not qualify for assistance with medications, Dr. Cook obtained medication samples to keep the patient compliant. Without proper treatment and care, many of these patients would have become more ill resulting in emergency room visits or hospitalization. In addition to volunteering her time in the clinic, Dr. Cook personally calls patients to check if they are on track with their treatment as well as check on them if a patient fails to report for a scheduled visit. Her enthusiasm, leadership and commitment to care are demonstrated by her personal sacrifice which she provides week after week after managing her own demanding job are a testament to moving Hopkins toward our aspirational goals of a diverse and inclusive institution. Congratulations Dr. Cook. Return to the awards page
