2008 Diversity Recognition Award Recipients

Kevin Clark

Mr. Kevin Clark

Kevin received his Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the Krieger School at JHU but studies composition at the Peabody Conservatory. Kevin wanted to find a way to reach young students in Baltimore City and thus, created a program with students from St. Ignatius Loyola Academy. He also convinced fellow composers from Peabody to work with him in offering composition lessons to the middle school group at St. Ignatius. The program teaches rudiments of composition, notation and development of musical ideas. This program reaches primarily African American students from 6th – 8th grade but also serves as an after school care program for students with a creative focus. Students are encouraged to explore music from a wide-range of traditions including hip-hop, rock, Broadway and classical styles. The students named the program “Junior Bach.”

Kevin also worked with Peabody’s curriculum committee to develop a credit-bearing course for composition majors to ensure that the Junior Bach program will continue even after he leaves Peabody. He and his family contributed a scholarship to Peabody’s Preparatory Department for one student each year, identified through the Junior Bach program. This scholarship entitles the recipient to receive free lessons from Peabody. Kevin has demonstrated a personal commitment to diversity and inclusiveness through music with the St. Ignatius students, and his leadership by including fellow Peabody students and faculty in the creation of the “Junior Bach” program. Congratulations Kevin.
